REACH Stroke

MMH is an active participant in the Remote Evaluation for Acute Ischemic Stroke (REACH) program with the Medical College of Georgia. The program allows stroke patients within smaller communities to have increased access to stroke specialists.

Through the use of a wireless camera, computer, speaker phone and the internet, stroke specialists at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta can look at and talk to the possible stroke patient as they are in our emergency department. This remote evaluation assists MMH staff with diagnosing an ischemic stroke (caused by a blood clot in the arteries of the brain) and determines if the patient is a good patient for the clot buster, tPA. Although tPA is not an option for hemorrhagic strokes (bleeding in the brain) the stroke specialists are able to offer
expertise in their management.
